We had a terrific holiday in Cairns and Port Douglas. Thank you for suggesting Waters Edge Apartments - they were perfect for our needs and very spacious. We stayed in on a number of nights and had some lovely meals with the Roos family who were placed next door to us. The facilities and the service were terrific. We went on one day trip to Kuranda - the train ride and sky rail were fantastic - I had no idea the scenery would be so beautiful. A lot of the stands at the market in Kuranda were closed, so I'm not sure we experienced it with the full atmosphere, but we certainly enjoyed the journey.
We also really enjoyed our stay in Port Douglas at Rendezvous - we met some friends there and it was a great place for young children. We mothers were very pleased with the free cooked breakfast (no dishes!) We did suffer quite a bit from midge (sandfly?) bites which was a little hard with the kids, and the bites still haven't cleared up even though we've been home a week! We didn't have any problems with them in Cairns though.
