Title : How to Keep Your Child Safe in Swimming Pools

The swimming pool is something that’s hugely attractive to children as well as adults.

That is, of course, as true at home as it is on holiday but even so, it’s probably worth restating a few largely common-sense safety protocols relating to children and the pool.

  • Keep an eye on them at all times - assuming they are under a certain age and self-responsibility level.
  • Obey all the safety advice, rules and regulations that might be pinned up in your hotel or Cairns luxury accommodation (or elsewhere).
  • Don’t let your kids run manically around the edge of the pool. There really is an excellent chance they will end up in the deep end up or knock someone else in. A variation on that is managing to cut and graze themselves on the side of the pool if they fall in accidentally.
  • Be careful about over-exuberant games when in the water. Sometimes kids can get over-excited and that can easily lead to injury or dangerous situations arising. For example, any game involving holding another child under the water ‘for a laugh’ or to ‘see who wins’ should be absolutely forbidden.
  • Some accommodation rules may prohibit diving and jumping in from height etc. If they don’t, be sure that your kids have received appropriate training on how to do it properly and are safety aware. Quite a few accidents happen with kids diving or jumping in and not spotting someone else directly underneath them.

Of course, it’s probably a bad idea to mollycoddle your children and having some outrageous fun in the swimming pool is one of the joys of growing up!

Even so, spend a few minutes thinking about some of the above issues and making sure that even your youngest children are brought up with an awareness of the need for safety when in and around the pool.

Happy Holidays
